Couldn’t wait to post this. Again, old school imagery c/o Lunar & Planetary Institute.
I think the repeating horizontal(ish) lines are transmission artifacts, while the gash across the middle of the image is damage sustained by the print before it was scanned. Puts me in mind of the old two-razorblades-in-the-back-of-a-toothbrush trick.
